Almelo is a city in eastern Overijssel in the Netherlands, extending across a wide area with numerous parks, green spaces, and residential neighborhoods. It sits in a flat landscape shaped by canals and waterways.
The city gained city rights in 1394 and later developed into an important industrial center during the 19th century. Textile manufacturing shaped its economy for generations.
The first mosque in the Netherlands was built here in 1976, reflecting the presence of the Turkish community. This building shows how the city welcomed different cultures.
The transport network is well developed with two railway stations connecting the city to major urban centers and international airports. Visitors can easily reach the city by train and travel onward from there.
The aristocratic estate Huize Almelo from the 1600s remains in the hands of the Van Rechteren Limpurg family and stands in the city center. The family actively participates in local environmental and restoration projects today.
