Sint-Elisabethziekenhuis Almelo, Former Catholic hospital in Almelo, Netherlands.
Sint-Elisabethziekenhuis is a red brick complex with slate roofs, originally designed as a hospital in Almelo. The building features corner pilasters, decorated entrance porticos with sandstone embellishments, and maintains its original separate entrances for inpatient and outpatient areas.
The hospital was designed by architects Th.J. van Elsberg and J. Stuyt and opened in 1928 to serve the local community. After closing in 1985, it was renovated in 1987 to accommodate residential units and cultural institutions instead of medical operations.
The former chapel now serves as a concert venue while other sections house the music school and theater company. This transformation shows how the building has become a cultural gathering place for the community.
The complex is located at Hofkampstraat 52 and is easily accessible from the town center. Visitors can view the exterior architecture and may attend cultural events held in the spaces when open to the public.
The sandstone entrance porticos carry the inscription 'St. Elisabeth MCMXXVIII', clearly marking the founding year through Roman numerals. These decorative details on the original entrances are now rare examples of the craftsmanship typical of that building era.
