Sint Anthonygasthuis

Sint Anthonygasthuis is a residential complex with 40 dwellings arranged around a central courtyard, forming a traditional Dutch hofje in Groningen. The layout shows closely built houses surrounding shared outdoor space, creating a tight-knit neighborhood where residents live in close proximity.

This complex was founded in 1517 as shelter for poor and sick residents of Groningen. Between 1702 and 1844, the rear section operated as an asylum before returning to its original purpose.

The gate entrance displays a Dutch inscription cautioning against mockery of elderly people, revealing the community values that once shaped daily life here. This message still sets the tone for how the place functions today and shows what mattered to residents.

The complex is located at Rademarkt 29 and accessible through a gate, with the courtyard open to visitors to walk through. A bed and breakfast operation on the grounds allows guests to experience the interior life of this protected national monument.

The building still serves its original purpose and is home to residents ranging from 30 to 90 years old, creating an intergenerational living arrangement rarely seen today. This continuing residential use is uncommon among similar Dutch compounds, most of which have been converted to museums or other purposes.
