Latijnse School, Renaissance school building at Sint-Stevenskerkhof, Netherlands
Latijnse School is a Renaissance-era educational building at Sint-Stevenskerkhof in Nijmegen with notable sculptural details. Apostle statues and Latin inscriptions of the Ten Commandments adorn the facade between the ground and first floors.
Herman van Herengrave constructed this building in 1544 to replace an earlier structure used for both schooling and parish purposes. It became an important center for learning and religious instruction throughout the following centuries.
The school represents how Renaissance learning became valued in the Netherlands and has shaped the character of this square for centuries. The Latin inscriptions on the facade reflect the importance of classical education in that era.
The building stands beside St. Stevens Church and is accessible from the Grote Markt via Sint-Stevenspoort in the city center. This location makes it easy to visit and observe the facade details while exploring the historic square.
In 2016 robotic technology created new apostle statues using 3D scans of earlier sculptures, which artisans then completed by hand. This project blends modern manufacturing methods with traditional craftsmanship to restore the facade.
