The Boterwaag is a weigh house at Grote Markt in Nijmegen, a rectangular brick structure with an upper floor, high gable roof, and prominent stairs on its facade. The ground floor was designed for weighing goods, while the upper level served different purposes.
The building was constructed in 1612 as a functional structure for the market community. Over the centuries it underwent several alterations to adapt its structure and purpose.
The building shows Dutch Renaissance design through its architectural details, particularly the cross-ribbed vaults supported by three internal columns. These features give the square its distinctive character.
