Landgoed Beekhuizen, Velp, Historic estate in Velp, Netherlands
Landgoed Beekhuizen is a large estate in Velp covering 164 hectares with deciduous forests, coniferous woodlands, beech avenues, and heathland. The valley of Beekhuizensebeek runs through it with natural springs and ponds shaping the land.
Alexander van Spaen bought the estate in 1682, and his descendant Johan Frederik Willem transformed it into a romantic landscape around 1777 that became known internationally. This redesign shaped how the land looks today.
Poems by Jacques Delille are placed throughout the grounds, showing how people here appreciated nature through artistic expression from an early time. You notice these words while walking and they change how you see the landscape around you.
Access the estate through the parking area at Beekhuizenseweg in Velp, where hiking trails begin. The paths move through different parts of the landscape and suit walkers of various abilities.
Two ancient oak trees nicknamed Philemon and Baucis stand near the creek beside small cabins. One cabin is lined with moss and once provided a resting spot for visitors walking through the grounds.
