Het Land van Ooit, Former amusement park in Drunen, Netherlands
Het Land van Ooit was an amusement park in Drunen that sprawled across about 34 hectares with a pink castle and medieval-themed grounds. The landscape included various structures, Napoleon-era soldier statues, and performance stages where actors staged scenes throughout the day.
The park was founded in 1989 by Marc Taminiau, a former Efteling director, who created an imaginary kingdom that operated for about 17 years. It closed in 2007 following financial difficulties that made the project no longer sustainable.
Visitors received knightly titles upon arrival and encountered actors dressed as medieval characters performing throughout the grounds. This theatrical approach shaped how people experienced the space and created a shared sense of participation in a fictional world.
The grounds are open for walking and photography, though most structures are no longer intact or operating. Visitors should know this is a historical site without facilities or guided tours available.
The park operated its own currency called OoitSent, which visitors had to purchase to reinforce its status as an independent fictional nation. This unconventional economic system made the experience feel like entering a parallel realm with its own rules.
