Braakman, Polder and lake in Zeeland, Netherlands
Braakman is a polder and freshwater lake area in Zeeland split into northern and southern sections. Walking and cycling routes move through the landscape, offering views across water and grassland.
The area formed from storm surges in the 14th and 15th centuries that created an inlet. Major floods in 1404 and 1421 reshaped the land permanently, and these events remain important to its story.
The farm here serves as a meeting point where visitors learn about the water birds and fish that live in the area. It connects people who come to explore with those working to protect this landscape.
Parking areas are located at Oost Zeedijk in Biervliet and near the farm. This visitor center makes a good starting point before heading into the water and grassland to walk or cycle.
Behind the farm grows an orchard with traditional apple and pear varieties from the region. Visitors can taste these fruits directly in late summer months.
