Fort near De Kwakel, Military fort in De Kwakel, Netherlands
Fort near De Kwakel consists of 18 rooms within its main structure and features two throat casemates adjacent to the central building.
The construction of this defensive fortification began in 1890 and required extensive excavation of peat before depositing substantial amounts of sand for stability.
The fort forms part of the Stelling van Amsterdam defense line, along with Fort bij Kudelstaart, Fort aan de Drecht, and Fort bij Uithoorn.
The fort changed ownership in 1972 when the Ministry of Defence sold it to private hands, leading to modifications including space for a billiard hall.
A site supervisor maintained a detailed diary during construction, documenting the challenges with material quality and workforce management in the 1900s.
