Domplein, Main square and archaeological site in Utrecht, Netherlands

Domplein is the main square and an archaeological site in the center of Utrecht, where remains from Roman times to the Middle Ages have been uncovered. The square is open and paved, surrounded by historic buildings, with the Dom Tower and the church standing apart from each other at opposite ends.

The site was built on the foundations of a Roman military fort called Trajectum, established in the first century. Over the centuries it grew from a military post into the heart of a medieval city, and the layout of the ground still reflects that long transformation.

Domplein is Utrecht's central meeting place, where the outlines of old church walls are visible in the paving underfoot. Roman stones sit beside modern cafes, so several layers of time feel close and tangible in a very small area.

The square sits at the center of Utrecht and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the old city. The paving is uneven in places, so sturdy shoes make walking around much more comfortable.

A tornado struck Utrecht in 1674 and brought down the nave that connected the tower to the church. Since then the two structures have stood apart, and the open gap between them is what gives the square its unusual shape today.
