Dachaumonument Amsterdamse Bos, War memorial in Amsterdamse Bos, Netherlands.
The Dachau Monument Amsterdamse Bos is a war memorial in the Amsterdamse Bos featuring a roughly 60-meter pathway made of Belgian blue stone. The path is bordered by carefully trimmed yew hedges and is located near the Bosbaan water area.
The monument was opened by Prince Bernhard and Princess Juliana in 1996 to commemorate Dutch victims who suffered at the Dachau concentration camp. It marks remembrance of a dark chapter that these people endured.
The name references the Dachau concentration camp, where many Dutch prisoners were taken during World War II. Visitors place flowers in the dark green yew hedges lining the path as a spontaneous way to pay respect.
The memorial is freely accessible at any time since it is located within a public park. It is helpful to visit early in the morning when it is quieter and you have time for reflection.
The uneven surface of the path, about 2.35 meters wide, is intentionally designed to symbolize the hardships prisoners faced. Around 500 concentration camp names are carved into the stones along the route.
