Amstelveen, Municipality at Amsterdam metropolitan area, Netherlands
Amstelveen sits just south of Amsterdam in North Holland and consists of several neighborhoods connected by roads and green spaces. The municipality borders the capital directly and mixes residential areas with parks and waterways.
The municipality was called Nieuwer-Amstel until 1964 and grew from a rural area with peat extraction. Proximity to Amsterdam led to its transformation into a residential district with urban character.
The population includes 142 different nationalities, with substantial Japanese and Indian communities contributing to the multicultural character of the city.
The Stadshart center offers shops and restaurants and serves as a starting point for exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. Trams and buses connect the municipality to Amsterdam and make it easy to move around the region.
Thijssepark is the first heempark in the Netherlands and has displayed native plant species across several hectares since its founding. Visitors can see landscapes here that recall the original flora of the region.
