Hoogenweerth Castle

Hoogenweerth Castle is an estate on a peninsula of the Maas River near Maastricht, consisting of a main residence and a former coach house building. The grounds contain formal gardens with rose plantings and structured hedges spread across roughly 4.5 hectares of private land.

The estate first appeared in records during 1444 as 'Der hauwert', establishing it as one of the region's oldest documented sites. Antonius Vaes redesigned the property in the 16th century, creating the foundation of the structures that stand today.

The architecture shows how different families shaped the estate's appearance over time through their personal tastes and choices. Walking through the grounds, you notice the blend of design periods that reveal what mattered to each generation of owners.

The grounds are situated along a protected section of the riverbank that is straightforward to explore on foot. Pathways wind through the gardens and along the water, with access generally available through marked entrances.

The estate maintains a private water terrace that offers one of the few direct river access points in Maastricht. This direct connection to the water is a rare feature that most other properties in the city do not possess.
