Veldkamp's Meuln, windmill in Bellingwolde, Netherlands
Veldkamp's Meuln is a grain mill with seven stories built in 1855 in Bellingwedde. The square structure sits on an elevated platform and is powered by four large sails that convert wind movement into grinding action.
The mill was built in 1855 by the Veldkamp family and served generations for grinding grain and extracting oil. Storms damaged it severely in 1895, 1972, and 1976, yet it was restored each time and now stands as a protected Rijksmonument.
Veldkamp's Meuln carries the name of the family who operated it for generations and made it central to village life. The miller was an important craftsman in the community, and the mill served as a gathering place where farmers brought their grain and exchanged news.
The mill is located on Hoofdweg in Bellingwedde and is easily visible from the road. Visitors should note that it is private property rather than a public museum, so it is best to arrange a visit in advance or check for open days.
Inside the mill are still two original pairs of millstones that were operated by the gear system connected to the sails. Volunteer millers occasionally start the mill to show visitors how grain was ground using wind power.
