Westerwolde

Westerwolde is a municipality in Groningen province with countryside featuring open fields, streams, and patches of forest spread across several villages. The landscape shows a mix of farmland and wooded areas throughout the region.

The municipality was formed in 2018 through the merger of Bellingwedde and Vlagtwedde, two communities with medieval origins. Both areas trace their roots back through centuries of settlement and early religious structures.

The regional museum De Oude Wolden displays works by artists from the Groningen-based group De Ploeg, reflecting local artistic traditions. Visitors can see how the region's art scene developed through these locally rooted works.

Two town halls in Sellingen and Wedde serve as contact points for administration and local services. Public transportation connects the area to neighboring cities, making it easy to travel within and beyond the region.

The Giezelbaarg sand hill features a monument remembering those accused during the 16th-century witch trials in this region. This location blends natural landscape with an important chapter of local history.
