Wagenwerkplaats Amersfoort, Railway maintenance complex in Soesterkwartier, Netherlands.
Wagenwerkplaats Amersfoort is a former railway maintenance complex spread across 24 hectares with numerous industrial buildings in the Soesterkwartier neighborhood. The structures feature distinctive rows of windows and sawtooth roofs that flood the workshops with natural light.
The railway company established this workshop in 1904 after outgrowing their previous facility in Haarlem. The site became a major repair hub for the expanding rail network over the following decades.
The former railway repair workshops now serve as gathering places for artists and cultural organizations. Performance spaces have emerged within the original buildings, creating venues for contemporary arts and music.
The site is now being developed as a mixed-use residential area while preserving many of the original industrial buildings. You can walk through the complex and see how the historic structures blend with new living spaces.
More than 200 railway workers and their families relocated from Haarlem to Amersfoort to work at the new facility. These workers formed an entirely new railway community that grew around the workshops.
