Amersfoort, Historical city center in Utrecht, Netherlands
Amersfoort is a Dutch city in the province of Utrecht with a medieval center and several train stations. The place forms a junction between major transport routes and connects larger cities in different directions.
The settlement gained city rights in 1259 from the Bishop of Utrecht and developed as a trading town. In the 17th century, a wager among citizens led to the arrival of a massive boulder that still stands in the center today.
The name comes from medieval times and means "ford on the Amer", a river that flows through the town. Residents often call their home Keistad after the large boulder that has stood in the center for centuries and shapes local identity.
The city has three train stations offering regular rail connections to Amsterdam, Utrecht and other Dutch cities. The medieval center is easy to explore on foot and sits close to the main station.
The house where painter Piet Mondriaan grew up still stands in town and shows how the artist spent his early years. The building gives insight into the early surroundings of an artist who later became world famous.
