't Hert, Windmill in Ellemeet, Schouwen-Duiveland, Netherlands
Molen 't Hert, also known as Oostermolen, is a round stone windmill built in 1748 in the village of Ellemeet, in the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland in the province of Zeeland. It is a ground-sailer type mill, meaning its sails rotate close to the ground, and it features a rotating cap that turns the sails into the wind.
The mill was built in 1748 and served local farmers as a grain mill for many generations, until it stopped operating in 1996. It has been a listed national monument since 1965, which helped ensure its later restoration.
The mill sits on Weelweg in the village of Ellemeet and can be viewed from outside at any time. On windy days the sails may be turning, and information boards near the small shed behind the mill explain how it works.
When workers dug around the mill in 1960, they found the remains of an even older mill buried beneath it on the same spot. Some of the old wooden beams inside the mill were also made from former sails, showing how nothing was wasted by the people who kept it running.
