Oosterbeek

Oosterbeek is a historic estate complex in Wassenaar combining a mansion, outbuildings, and extensive grounds with mature vegetation. The property spans roughly 50 acres and includes a central pond, garden features, and tree-lined pathways throughout the landscape.

Jonathan van Luchtenburch purchased the land in 1629 and built a moated mansion with formal gardens by the mid-1600s. Landscape designers later redesigned the grounds into an English-style park with flowing paths and natural planting between the late 1700s and mid-1800s.

The formal gardens, mansion, and landscaped grounds served as a family residence and showcase of wealth for centuries, reflecting the lifestyle of wealthy Dutch merchants and landowners who valued European garden design traditions.

The estate is open to the public with multiple entry points around the perimeter. The grounds are well maintained by local authorities, making it easy to explore on foot at your own pace.

Film studios were established here in the 1930s and later repurposed by German forces during World War II for propaganda production. Few visitors realize this peaceful park once served as a wartime production facility with significant historical consequences.
