Sint Elisabeth Ziekenhuis, Municipal monument and former hospital in Leiden, Netherlands.
Sint Elisabeth Ziekenhuis is a three-story brick building on Hooigracht street with symmetrical wings and generous windows typical of early 20th-century Dutch hospital design. The structure includes multiple stairwells and interconnected spaces that reflect its original function as a medical facility.
The facility began in 1892 when Franciscan Sisters from Breda established a Catholic hospital inside a converted boarding school building. Over the 20th century it evolved into a modern medical center before eventually closing as a hospital.
The name refers to Saint Elisabeth, honoring the Catholic tradition that shaped healthcare in the region for generations. This connection between faith and medicine is still visible in how the building sits within the city and its careful architectural design.
The building sits on Hooigracht, an easy walk from central Leiden with good street visibility. Since it now houses student residences, interior access is not available to visitors, but the exterior architecture can be appreciated from street level.
The building faced demolition but was saved through the efforts of local residents and activists who advocated for its protection as a municipal monument. This intervention preserved an important example of hospital architecture and allowed its transformation into residential housing.
