Renderklippen, Nature area and heath in Veluwe, Netherlands
Renderklippen is a nature area and heathland situated between Epe and Heerde, featuring gentle elevation changes and sandy ridges covered in heather. The site spans several hundred hectares and includes wetlands with acidic ponds throughout.
People lived in this area during the late Bronze Age around 700 BC, as shown by archaeological remains. Stone Age burial mounds found nearby indicate how far back human occupation extends.
A flock of around 150 sheep helps maintain the landscape by preventing trees from taking over, keeping the characteristic heathland appearance alive.
The area has marked trails suitable for hiking and cycling activities. The Schaapskooi rest stop along Elburgerweg offers a place to rest and refresh yourself during your visit.
The area creates one of the Netherlands' darkest natural environments at night, home to multiple peat bogs. These conditions allow rare plant species adapted to acidic soils to flourish here.
