Loenen aan de Vecht

Loenen aan de Vecht is a village in Utrecht Province that stretches along the riverbank with traditional Dutch houses and former estates. The streets feature carefully preserved merchant houses that reflect the settlement's commercial past.

The settlement was first recorded in 953 as Lona and developed around Castle Kronenburg, which existed until 1710 when it was transformed into an estate. This shift marked the transition from its role as a fortified site to its function as a residential area for the wealthy.

The white village church anchors the center and draws visitors with its distinctive architecture. People gather here to pause and experience the settlement's story through its buildings.

The village lies about 10 km west of Hilversum and is accessible by bike or regional bus, making it convenient for day trips. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the historic paths along the river can be uneven.

One of the earliest known references to a golf-like game called Colf dates to 1297, when players hit balls from the Court House toward the gate of Castle Kronenburg. This game may have been an early version of what later became golf, showing this place's connection to sporting innovation.
