De Ster, Wind powered sawmill in Utrecht, Netherlands
De Ster is a wind-powered sawmill in Utrecht equipped with a single sawing frame driven by counterweights to cut wood. The mechanical system harnesses wind energy to power the cutting process through a connected shaft system.
The mill was built in 1739 and suffered partial destruction in 1911, after which it continued operating using electric power. Complete restoration later returned it to wind-powered operation.
The complex now houses a daycare center, artist studios, and music practice rooms within converted wooden storage buildings. This transformation shows how the site has evolved from a working mill into a vibrant community hub.
The mill is open to visitors on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m., with tours available by appointment at other times. The grounds provide good views of the machinery and how the mill operates from outside.
The mill uses a specialized multi-crank shaft system with a specific gear ratio that converts wind speed into precise cutting motions. This sophisticated transmission system allows for smooth and efficient cuts through the wood.
