Museum of Money, Monetary museum in Utrecht, Netherlands
The Museum of Money was an institution in Utrecht dedicated to exploring the history of currency and financial systems through objects spanning different time periods. The collection displayed coins, banknotes, and various financial instruments that illustrated how people managed and exchanged value throughout history.
The museum opened in 2007 within a 1911 building designed by architect C.H. Peters. The same building hosted the Royal Dutch Mint until 2020, creating a connection between the exhibition space and active coin production.
The exhibitions explored the relationship between people and money through interactive displays, focusing on both historical artifacts and modern financial systems.
The museum closed permanently in 2013 and is no longer accessible to visitors. The numismatic collection was relocated to De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam, while related archaeological items moved to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.
The building featured a dedicated viewing area where visitors could observe coin production at the Royal Dutch Mint operating next door in real time. This rare combination allowed people to see both historical artifacts and contemporary minting craft side by side.
