Central public library of Rotterdam, Public library in Rotterdam, Netherlands
The Central Public Library of Rotterdam is a public library in the city center of Rotterdam, spread across several floors with books, digital media, magazines, and periodicals. The building also houses reading areas, computer workstations, and spaces used for temporary exhibitions.
The building opened in 1983 as part of Rotterdam's postwar rebuilding effort, which reshaped much of the city center. The design was led in part by Dutch architect Jaap Bakema, who was known for his work on large public projects.
The library serves as a meeting place where visitors regularly attend readings, exhibitions, and workshops. This makes it more than just a place to borrow books.
The library sits in central Rotterdam and is easy to reach by public transport from most parts of the city. Computers with free internet access are available inside, and weekday opening hours tend to be longer than on weekends.
The building has a vertical structure with large windows that let natural light reach every floor, which is uncommon for a library of this size. From some areas on the upper floors, visitors can also see out over the Rotterdam city center.
