Gemeenschapsgebouw Slootdorp

The Gemeenschapsgebouw Slootdorp is a school building with classrooms connected by central gathering spaces. The design allows both small group work and full meetings of the entire school community within the same structure.

The building was constructed in 1934 as part of the Jewish Work Village Nieuwesluis, which included housing and community facilities. It stands today as one of the few structures remaining from that ambitious settlement project.

The building reflects how Dutch communities of the 1930s valued shared spaces where learning and gathering could happen together. The layout shows a practical belief that school buildings should serve the entire village, not just education.

The building can be accessed from outside and the surrounding area is easy to walk around. Since it is protected as a heritage monument, visitors should be respectful and remember it continues to serve an active function.

The structure originally served as both housing and a community center for Jewish immigrants before becoming a school. This dual purpose from its origins makes it a rare example of how the Jewish settlement project was conceived in the 1930s.
