Pelserpoort, Medieval defensive tower in Zwolle, Netherlands
The Pelserpoort is a medieval defensive tower in Zwolle with a half-round structure and integrated shooting loopholes. It stands as part of the original city fortification on the northeastern section of the historic city wall.
The tower was built between 1475 and 1500 as part of the city wall and was originally called Vestingtoren. It received its present name, Pelserpoort, only in the 20th century.
The name comes from the Pelsers, a guild of craftspeople who worked in this area. The structure still reflects the importance of this trade group in shaping the city.
The tower is located on Aan de Stadsmuur Street and is best seen from the northeastern direction. During winter months when trees lose their leaves, the structure becomes easier to view clearly.
During its 1980 restoration, the original sloped roof was replaced with battlements and a small turret based on historical drawings. However, the precise historical accuracy of this reconstruction remains uncertain.
