Zuiderhout, Teteringen, Care center and heritage site in Teteringen, Netherlands
Zuiderhout is a care facility within a heritage-protected building featuring a U-shaped design, bell tower, and neo-Romanesque chapel. The complex provides residential apartments and specialized nursing units across multiple locations for different care needs.
The complex was founded in 1915 as a missionary training house for the Society of the Divine Word. After World War II, the site was transformed into a retirement facility in 1967 and has served as a care center ever since.
The grounds reflect a long history of missionary work that once shaped daily life here. Religious buildings and chapels visible today show how spiritual practice was central to the place for many decades.
The site has several entrances and distinct areas, so orientation before your visit helps. The grounds spread across multiple locations, with both publicly accessible religious spaces and private residential areas.
A chapel dedicated to Mary was built here in 2009, replacing a Lourdes grotto that missionaries had created as thanks for surviving the war. This later structure shows how the site preserved its spiritual roots while adapting to modern times.
