Singelpark, park in Leiden, the Netherlands
Singelpark is a large circular park surrounding Leiden's historic center and extending about 6.3 kilometers along the old canals. It comprises seven smaller green spaces connected by water, bridges, and historic walls, creating a continuous walking route around the city.
The park follows the line of city walls dating to the 17th century that once protected Leiden. Remnants of these fortifications and historic gates such as Zijlpoort from the 1600s remain visible, marking the era when the city was a defended stronghold.
The park is named after the historic canals that once protected the city and now shape its form. Residents use it daily for walking, cycling, or quiet moments, making it woven into the rhythm of life in Leiden.
The park is easily accessible on foot or by bike and offers plenty of benches and quiet spots to rest. Wear comfortable shoes since the route is long, but you can explore it in sections at your own pace.
A notable feature is the Molen de Valk windmill from the early 1600s, now functioning as a small museum teaching visitors about the history of grain milling. Additionally, an art exhibition called Sankofa has been running since September 2025, examining Leiden's complex past during the colonial era.
