Heilige Geest- of Arme Wees- en Kinderhuis, Historic orphanage in Leiden, Netherlands.
The Heilige Geest or Poor Orphans and Children's House is a former orphanage in Leiden located at Hooglandse Kerkgracht 15. The building features distinctive stepped gables, extends across multiple wings, and includes a stone gateway with triangular pediment, with a rear section added in 1774 connecting toward the Oude Rijn river.
The orphanage was established in 1583 at the site of a former women's hospital and underwent major renovations from 1604 to 1607. These early transformations created the architectural framework that survives today.
This place served as a center where orphaned children received schooling and learned practical skills within a structured community. The building's design reflects how the city organized care for vulnerable young people.
The building sits directly along one of the city's main canals and is easily accessible on foot. Its position and architecture allow clear views of the complex from the street.
The entrance gateway displays a carved stone group showing children calling upon the Holy Spirit, a rare sculptural statement of the institution's religious purpose. This artwork serves as a touching reminder of how the city understood its duty toward orphaned children.
