Willem Witsenhuis, Historical artist residence in Oosterpark, Netherlands
Willem Witsenhuis is an artist's house in Amsterdam designed by architect Eduard Cuypers in 1884. The rooms are decorated with lithographed wallpaper and filled with over 3000 items including paintings, furniture, carpets, and books.
The house was built in 1884 by architect Eduard Cuypers and became the residence of painter Willem Witsen from 1891. Witsen lived there with breaks until 1923, establishing its role as an artist's home.
The house served as a gathering place for artists and writers of the late 19th century literary movement. Visitors can still see the rooms where creative people regularly came together to share ideas.
Only two rooms of the house are normally open for visits and require advance arrangement. You will need to contact the management committee in writing before coming to see the interior.
The building today houses apartments for young Dutch writers who receive five-year residencies through a selection process. This practice connects the house's artistic past to its current support for contemporary creators.
