Sint-Bonifatiuskerk, Catholic church in Amsterdam East, Netherlands
Sint-Bonifatiuskerk was a Neo-Gothic church in Amsterdam East with three naves and a striking tower. The interior housed a Maarschalkerweerd organ and several religious furnishings designed by architect A.C. Bleijs.
The church was built between 1884 and 1886 by architect Evert Margry and became a religious center for the neighborhood. From 1982 onward, the congregation moved to a smaller chapel, leading to the building's demolition in 1984.
The name references Saint Boniface, an important missionary figure in European religious history. The building served as a gathering place where the local Catholic community practiced and maintained their traditions.
The original church site at Kastanjeplein is no longer accessible as the building was demolished in 1984. Visitors can view the location where a nursing home now stands on the former grounds.
Although the church building no longer exists, the neighborhood preserves a visible reminder of its past. The clock faces from the original tower were mounted on a lattice mast atop the current nursing home and remain visible from the square.
