De Titaantjes, Bronze sculpture in Oosterpark, Amsterdam, Netherlands
De Titaantjes is a bronze sculpture group in Oosterpark showing three characters seated on a bench, based on figures from a classic tale of Amsterdam life. The figures are openly positioned and invite visitors to sit alongside them and observe the park as the original characters did.
The sculptor Hans Bayens created this work in 1971 as a tribute to Dutch literature and Amsterdam's history. The original bronze was stolen in 1985, and a replacement version was installed in 1988.
The sculpture honors the opening line of a 1915 novella by Amsterdam writer Nescio, connecting visitors to a story rooted in the city's literary past. When you sit on nearby benches, you occupy the same space where the author once observed the park and its people.
The sculpture stands in Oosterpark, accessible from multiple park entrances and near public transportation stops. You can visit the figures anytime during park hours, and there is no entry fee to see the artwork.
The bronze figures carry the opening words of a story that many Amsterdam residents know from school without ever having read the original work. This bond between text and sculpture means every visit becomes an encounter with a literary tradition more deeply rooted in the city than many realize.
