Betlehemkerk, Gothic church in Zwolle, Netherlands.
The Betlehemkerk is a Gothic church in Zwolle featuring a two-aisled hall with stone vaults and round columns throughout its interior space. The distinctive carved capitals where the columns meet the walls divide the northern and southern sections of the structure.
The building was constructed in 1309 as a monastery chapel and survived the major city fire of 1324. During the 1300s it was enlarged to add a second aisle, expanding the space available for worshippers.
The name references Bethlehem, Jesus's birthplace, reflecting its original purpose as a monastery chapel. Today visitors can see gravestones of local families and ornate furnishings inside that show how important this place was to the community over centuries.
The church is located at Bethlehems Kerkplein 35 in Zwolle and now functions as a cultural venue. Following major interior renovations completed in the late 1980s, the space is well-maintained and accessible for visitors to explore.
The church walls display three red sandstone relief carvings that showcase medieval craftsmanship and religious themes. Visitors can also see painted wooden choir stalls decorated with floral and ornamental designs from the 1300s and 1400s.
