Cereol factory, Industrial heritage monument in Utrecht, Netherlands
The Cereol factory is an industrial monument located along the Merwedekanaal in Utrecht, featuring large brick walls, expansive windows, and high ceilings that reflect its manufacturing heritage. The building extends along the canal with several entry points.
The building opened in 1908 as a factory for oil and flaxseed cookies and later shifted to soy processing in the 1950s. Production ended in 2002.
The factory now houses a primary school, library, theater space, and meeting rooms that serve the local community. These uses show how an old industrial site has become a gathering place for different groups of people.
The building is located at Kanaalweg 91 with multiple visitor entrances and bicycle parking near the main access point. The site is easy to reach on foot or by bike.
A fire in 2008 destroyed the interior of the main building, but restoration kept the original facade while creating modern spaces inside. This contrast between the old exterior and new interior is still noticeable today.
