Lloyd-complex, Maritime heritage complex in Eastern Docklands, Netherlands.
The Lloyd Complex is a maritime transport facility along Eastern Handelskade spanning 2 hectares (about 5 acres). The site combines office buildings, residential blocks, and a hotel with decorated brick facades and natural stone details throughout.
The complex was built in the early 1900s as headquarters for the Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd shipping company, which handled cargo and passenger routes. The site grew with the shipping industry and later became a protected monument to this era.
The complex displays expressionist brick design through its rhythmic facade divisions and carefully detailed brickwork patterns. These architectural choices reflected how the maritime shipping industry expressed its importance through generous and thoughtfully designed buildings.
The complex is located at Oostelijke Handelskade and accessible by public transport in the Eastern Docklands area. Visitors can explore the exterior and public spaces, though some buildings serve private or hotel functions internally.
The complex preserves original tiled hallways, colorful stained glass windows, and two warehouses named after South American countries: Brazil and Argentina. This naming reflects the global trade routes that the company once served.
