Fort Het Hemeltje, Military fortress in Houten, Netherlands
Fort Het Hemeltje spans 7.5 hectares with a length of 275 meters and width of 140 meters, surrounded by a protective moat.
The fort, constructed between 1877 and 1881, served as the final fortification in the New Dutch Waterline to protect the elevated Houtense Vlakte region.
The fortress now functions as a center for sustainability organizations while maintaining its status as a protected national monument with registered historical structures.
The fort contains multiple structures including two-story barracks, flank batteries, cannon warehouses, and guard rooms accessible through designated pathways.
An explosion at the fort on June 28, 1945, marked a significant event, leading to the loss of three lives including two Internal Forces guards.
