Stania State

Stania State is an architectural ensemble in Oentsjerk featuring a neoclassical main building with two floors, an attic story, and a central balcony supported by natural stone columns. The property preserves its original kitchen with Dutch sandstone flooring and white-tiled walls, along with formal gardens that were later transformed into a romantic park design.

The estate was founded in the 16th century and later suffered significant damage from fire, after which it was reconstructed using salvaged materials from its original structure. Major transformations during the 19th century gave the property its present-day appearance and layout.

The main house displays characteristic Frisian style through its red brick walls and balanced window layout. These architectural features give the ensemble its distinctive regional character.

The grounds are straightforward to explore on foot, with all main features like the manor house and gardens clearly visible from the paths. Visitors should allow time to wander through the gardens since the romantic landscape design rewards slow exploration and attention to detail.

Landscape architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard created a romantic park in the 1820s that skillfully blended romantic design principles with surviving original garden features. This merger of old and new garden styles creates an unusually coherent historical landscape that reflects multiple design periods.
