Heilige Geestklooster, monastery complex in Steyl, Netherlands
The Heilige Geestklooster is a monastery complex in Venlo that originated around 1360 and underwent several expansions during the 1600s. Built from brick and natural stone, this architectural ensemble served religious orders and the local community through chapel services for centuries.
A chapel dedicated to the Holy Spirit stood on this site from around 760, housing religious communities who served the area for over a thousand years. The complex was seized and closed by French forces in 1795, demolished in 1928, though underground passages may remain beneath the current street level.
The site is located in central Venlo at the corner of Jodenstraat and Heilige Geeststraat. Access is straightforward from street level, though visitors should note that any remaining underground sections lie beneath the current pavement.
Beneath the streets of modern Venlo may lie underground chambers from the original monastery, hidden archaeological evidence of the complex below street level. These subterranean spaces remain invisible but possibly preserved beneath the pavement.
