De Zandmeren, Body of water and recreation area in Maasdriel, Netherlands

De Zandmeren is a group of lakes in a recreation area in Maasdriel, in the Netherlands. Some of the lakes are used for swimming and fishing, others for sailing and boating, and shallow sandy edges along the shore form small beaches.

The lakes formed when workers extracted sand from the ground for construction, leaving deep pits behind. Over time those pits filled with water and gradually became the lakes that now make up the recreation area.

The name "Zandmeren" simply means "sand lakes" in Dutch, a direct reference to how the lakes were formed. On warm days, families spread out along the small beaches, children play near the water, and fishermen settle at the shore in the early morning.

The area is flat and easy to explore on foot or by bike, with marked paths running around the lakes. Parking and basic facilities are available nearby, making it comfortable to spend a full day there.

One of the bridges in the area is built to float, meaning it rises and falls with the water level rather than being fixed in place. This design was chosen after severe flooding in July 2021, so the crossing stays usable no matter how high the water gets.
