Dakpark, Elevated park in Bospolder-Tussendijken, Netherlands
Dakpark is an elevated park stretching about 1200 meters across Bospolder-Tussendijken, built nine meters above ground on top of a commercial building. The space includes gardens, recreational areas, and walking paths that connect different parts of the neighborhood.
The park emerged in the 2000s as part of an urban renewal initiative that transformed a former industrial area into public green space. Turning an industrial zone into an actively used park marked a major shift for the neighborhood.
The community garden is managed by local residents who grow vegetables, maintain fruit hedges, and raise sheep and chickens. These spaces show how neighbors actively shape and use the park for their own purposes.
The park is open to visitors daily with multiple entry points for exploring different sections. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to visit when it is less crowded.
The park was specifically designed to cool the neighborhood during extreme heat, with integrated water steps that provide relief on hot days. This practical response to heat stress shows how the space serves purposes beyond simple recreation.
