Ignatiuscollege, Jesuit monastery in Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands.
Ignatiuscollege is a former Jesuit monastery in Valkenburg aan de Geul, made up of a main building and a chapel with ribbed vaults. The complex stands along Kloosterweg 34-36 and occupies a large plot, giving it the scale of a full religious and educational compound.
The monastery was built in 1893 after the Jesuits were expelled from Prussia and needed a new base for their work. Over the following decades, it grew into an established place for religious education within the order.
The chapel inside the complex still has its stained glass windows made by the Oidtmann workshop, a well-known glassmaking studio from the region. Walking through the space, you can see how the building was designed to support both prayer and study at the same time.
The complex sits on the edge of Valkenburg aan de Geul and can be reached on foot from the town center. Visiting during the day gives the best light for seeing the chapel's stained glass windows from the inside.
The roof of the building once held a working observatory with a refractor telescope used by the Jesuits for astronomical observations. The equipment was destroyed during World War II, and almost no trace of it remains today.
