Lunetten, Moluccan residential area in Vught, Netherlands.
Lunetten is a Moluccan residential neighborhood in Vught with modern single-family homes built on the site of former military barracks. The settlement lies near wooded areas and includes around 140 houses, with Barak 1 serving as a church building for the local Moluccan community.
Following evacuation from Indonesia in 1951, more than 3000 Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families were settled in Lunetten. The site had been a former concentration camp, which became the new home for this displaced community.
The neighborhood serves as a center for Moluccan traditions, where people gather for religious services, celebrations, and everyday community life. These spaces preserve language, cooking, and customs that pass from one generation to the next.
The residential settlement is easily accessible on foot with wide, quiet streets and clear orientation. Visitors should take time to explore the neighborhood slowly and observe the architecture and green spaces at a comfortable pace.
The neighborhood preserves a piece of history by transforming a former war prisoner camp into a living community. This transformation shows how a place of hardship became the foundation for rebuilding and living together.
