Schutterswei, Prison complex in Alkmaar, Netherlands
Schutterswei is a former prison complex in Alkmaar with classical architecture, cell blocks, workshops, and a central courtyard enclosed by high walls. The structure shows typical 19th century design with practical room arrangements for administration and housing.
The facility was built in 1884 with 26 cells and expanded to 104 units by 1893. It served the city as a detention center until it closed in 2013.
The site takes its name from the former training ground of Alkmaar's municipal guard, a connection reflected in the word Schutterswei. Today the buildings still reflect this link to the city's local identity.
The grounds were converted into a hotel offering 102 rooms and suites with conference spaces and event facilities. Visitors can also access fitness facilities and the space accommodates up to 375 guests for various events.
In its final years of operation the facility housed undocumented immigrants with criminal records from European Union countries awaiting deportation. This use represents a late phase in its history before it took on its new role as a hospitality venue.
