Sionkerk, Reformed church in Urk, Netherlands
Sionkerk is a church building in Urk located at De Noord 7, designed by architect W.M. van Beijnum and completed in 1993 for the Reformed congregation. The sanctuary holds about 500 people in the main hall and accommodates an additional 150 in a side room divided by a folding wall, while a 1925 organ provides the musical backdrop for services.
The current building was constructed in 1993, replacing a smaller structure that had served the community since 1982. The organ inside dates to 1925 and was originally installed in a psychiatric hospital chapel in Noordwijkerhout before being relocated to this location.
The church serves as a gathering place for the local Reformed community, where Sunday services feature psalm singing and scripture discussions that reflect the traditions of this faith. These regular meetings shape the spiritual rhythm of the island and show how worship practices remain central to community life.
The building is easy to access with flexible seating arrangements, as the side room can be opened or closed by a folding wall depending on the number of people attending. The main entrance sits centrally in town, making it straightforward to find and visit at various times.
When the organ was installed, its original trumpet stops were exchanged for parts from another instrument, altering the sound characteristics of the piece. This adaptation shows how historical instruments are adjusted when relocated to different spaces.
