Harstad Municipality

Harstad Municipality is an administrative division on Hinnøya island, located between two fjords along the northern Norwegian coast. The territory centers around the town of Harstad, which serves as the administrative hub.

The area formed in 1904 from the district of Trondenes and experienced several territorial expansions, including the annexation of Bjarkøy in 2013. These changes shaped the modern structure of the administrative division.

The Festival of North Norway brings musical performances to local venues, connecting artists from different countries through events held under the midnight sun.

The area is connected to other places through Harstad/Narvik Airport and coastal express routes. Harstad town is the main hub for services and infrastructure.

Bronze age settlements and Trondenes Church are found within this territory, revealing signs of long human presence in the region. The geographic position creates extreme light conditions with midnight sun and polar night.
