Aulestad

Aulestad is a farm museum in Gausdal that preserves the former residence of a celebrated Norwegian author. The rooms contain original furnishings, personal belongings, and artwork that document the family's life and interests.

The house became the family's residence in the early 1800s and remained their home for many decades. After the family's passing, it was converted to a museum in 1935 and has remained open to the public since then.

The farm served as home to one of Norway's most important writers, and his presence shaped the identity of this place. Today, visitors can observe how daily life unfolded here, gaining a sense of the routines and surroundings that inspired his creative work.

Access is along a rural road through countryside, so allow extra time for getting there. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the grounds are uneven and walking connects the different buildings.

The farm is preserved with such authenticity that the rooms feel as though the residents just stepped away. This almost untouched quality allows visitors to sense the past more directly than at most other places like this.
