Lærdal Tunnel, Road tunnel in Vestland, Norway
Lærdal Tunnel is a 24,509-meter road structure running through mountains between Lærdal and Aurland municipalities in Vestland. The roadway runs straight through rock and is equipped with safety installations along its entire length.
Construction started in 1995 and continued until the opening in November 2000. The work created a year-round connection through mountains that were often impassable in winter before.
The artificial caves inside the tube are lit with changing colors and help reduce fatigue during long drives. The concept comes from Norwegian design thinking about comfort in underground traffic.
Emergency phones are available every 250 meters, while fire extinguishers are placed at 125-meter intervals. Drivers should take a short break in the lit cave sections if they feel tired.
A large underground chamber in the middle section houses an air treatment plant with electrostatic filters. This system removes diesel particles and other pollutants from the air created by traffic.
