Fredrikstad Bridge, Steel road bridge in Fredrikstad Municipality, Norway
Fredrikstad Bridge is a steel road bridge over the Glomma River in Fredrikstad, Norway, connecting the eastern and western parts of the municipality. It runs 824 meters long and 13.4 meters wide, carrying road traffic and a dedicated path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge opened on August 18, 1957, when Crown Prince Olav inaugurated it as part of Norway's post-war effort to improve road connections. Before it was built, people relied on ferry crossings to get across the Glomma.
The bridge is a daily part of life in Fredrikstad, used by commuters, cyclists, and pedestrians who cross the Glomma River as part of their regular routines. Standing on it, you can look down at the wide river and watch boats moving through the water below.
Pedestrians and cyclists can cross on a dedicated path alongside the road, with open views of the river on both sides. Crossing outside of rush hours makes the experience more comfortable, especially on foot.
The bridge is made up of 23 separate spans and rises to a maximum height of 64 meters above the ground, making it one of the tallest points in the city. Its design was inspired by the same engineering approach used for the Karmsund Bridge, another Norwegian steel structure built around the same period.
