Kongsten fort

Kongsten Fort stands on the Galgeberget cliff and features high stone bastions, hornworks, and underground military passages known as casemates. The structure was strategically positioned to protect Fredrikstad and controlled the waterways around the city.

The fort was built in 1685 as part of Fredrikstad's defense system and played an important role in Norwegian fortification history. It survived various periods of military use and was later preserved as a cultural monument.

The fort displays King Christian V's gold monogram above its main gate, marking his visit when the structure was temporarily called Christianstein. This royal mark remains visible today and connects the fort to Norwegian royal history.

The fort is accessible to visitors and offers clear views across Fredrikstad and the surrounding region. The location is relatively easy to reach and works well for exploring Norwegian military heritage.

Military engineers selected this elevated position to prevent enemies from using the strategic high ground for increasing their artillery range against the city. The fort thus controlled not only direct attack routes but also neutralized the tactical advantage of surrounding higher terrain.
