Kongsten fort, Fortress heritage site in Fredrikstad, Norway.
Kongsten Fort stands on Galgeberget cliff, featuring high stone bastions, hornworks, and underground military passages known as casemates.
Constructed in 1685 as part of Fredrikstad's defense system, the fort contained twenty cannons and accommodated 150 soldiers during its active military period.
The fort displays King Christian V's gold monogram above its main gate, marking the monarch's visit when the structure was temporarily named Christianstein.
The fortress location offers clear views across Fredrikstad and remains open to visitors interested in exploring Norwegian military engineering and architecture.
Military engineers selected this elevated position to prevent enemies from using the strategic high ground for increasing their artillery range against the city.
